MINDFULNESS

Tuning in to Kids teaches the practice of mindfulness with both parents and children. There is an emerging body of research that indicates that mindfulness can help children improve their abilities to pay attention, to calm down when they are upset and to make better decisions. It also helps with emotional regulation and cognitive focus

EMOTION COACHING

Emotion coaching is a way of responding to children’s emotions that helps them to learn about their emotions. The key aspects of Emotion Coaching are identified as:

  • being aware of children’s emotions

  • viewing children’s display of emotions as a time for intimacy and teaching

  • helping children to verbally label the emotions being experienced

  • empathising and validating children’s emotions

  • helping children to solve problems (and setting limits where appropriate)

Tuning In To Kids

What is it?

Tuning in to Kids is an evidence-based parenting program that focuses on the emotional connection between parents and children. In particular the program teaches parents skills in emotion coaching, which is to recognize, understand and respond to children’s emotions in an accepting, supportive way. This approach helps the child to understand and manage their emotions.

Who Developed it?

It was developed by Dr. Sophie Havighurst and Ann Harley in Melbourne, Australia, and has been evaluated in multiple randomized controlled trials that have shown the program leads to positive outcomes including improving parenting, parent-child relationships and children’s emotional competence and behavior. The program has been particularly effective with children with clinical-level emotional and behavioral difficulties.

What is my role?

I am a trained Tuning Into Kids Facilitator. Tuning in to Kids and Tuning in to Teens parenting groups are run exclusively by professionals who have completed the Tuning in to Kids and Tuning in to Teens professional training and are certified as facilitators. I received a two day training at Auburn University facilitated by the program developer, Dr. Sophie Havighurst. I and only one other student were offered a fully subsidized training spot to take part in this training.
